WordPress Logo WordPress founder and lead developer Matt Mullenweg has announced the launch of the WordPress Foundation, a US tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit organisation. Mullenweg says that, "We finally have all our ducks in a row, proper tax status, and the beginnings of a non-profit mission to work toward". According to the homepage for the new foundation, which falls under legally registered charity status, it aims "to democratise publishing through Open Source, GPL software".

The foundation cites the Free Software Foundation and the Mozilla Foundation as its inspirations. It is dedicated to supporting and promoting the WordPress project and other related open source software, while also being responsible for protecting related WordPress trademarks, such as WordCamp. WordPress is a free, open source blogging platform that is released under the GNU General Public License.
