The WordPress developers have released version 3.5 of the popular open source content management and publishing platform. WordPress 3.5 is code-named "Elvin" in honour of Jazz drummer Elvin Jones and brings a redesigned media management interface, a new default theme, and a reworked admin area that supports HiDPI (Retina) resolutions.

The redesigned media workflow allows users to drag images into WordPress's media manager and organise them in galleries. In the interface, users can now also edit captions from the main overview and reorder items by simply dragging and dropping them in place. The new default theme is called Twenty Twelve and was designed by developers from The Theme Foundry. It is the first default WordPress theme that supports seamless scaling from desktop to mobile resolutions. It also incorporates the Open Sans font from Ascender Corporation, which was originally commissioned by Google for some of their web pages.

For WordPress 3.5, the developers have also reworked all graphics in the admin interface to be compatible with high resolution displays such as can be found on Apple's recent MacBook Pro line. The colour picker that is used in many new themes to change the colours of fonts and backgrounds has been completely redesigned. Accessibility has also been improved so that the interface should now be easier to use with screen readers and similar accessibility tools.

A complete list of the new features and improvements can be found in the WordPress Codex. WordPress 3.5 is available for download from the project's site. Alternatively, existing users can update automatically via the Dashboard ➤ Updates menu in the WordPress admin interface. Source code for WordPress is licensed under the GPLv2 or later.
