WordPress logo Theme customisation improvements lead the list of new features in version 3.4 of the open source blogging platform WordPress. The project's founder and lead developer Matt Mullenweg says that the new release also features "significant improvements" to custom headers, Twitter embedding and image captions.

Code-named "Green" after the late jazz guitarist and composer Grant Green, WordPress 3.4 introduces a theme customiser that allows users to preview different looks and settings without changing the front-end design on a live site. Users can now select custom headers and background images from the Media Library, and custom headers are said to be more flexible. Theme search and selection have also been improved, and the developers say that they "have more planned for the customiser down the road".

Other changes include support for HTML in image captions and expanded support for embedding Twitter posts using permalinks, as well as internationalisation and localisation improvements. Under-the-hood changes aimed at developers include better WP_Query performance, an API for registering theme support for custom headers and backgrounds, and an XML-RPC API for external and mobile applications.

Further information about the update, including a full list of changes, can be found in the release notes and in the change log. WordPress 3.4 can be downloaded from the project's site; existing users can update via the Dashboard ➤ Updates menu in the site admin area. Source code for WordPress is licensed under the GPLv2.
