WordPress logo Lead WordPress developer Ryan Boren has announced the arrival of a first release candidate (RC1) for version 3.3 of WordPress. Boren says that "Release Candidate stage means we think we're done and are about ready to launch this version, but are doing one last check before we officially call it".

WordPress 3.3, the next major update to the open source content management system (CMS), has an upgraded Toolbar (previously known as the admin bar) and a new HTML5 media uploader that uses Plupload, an open source upload handler with drag-and-drop functionality. For browsers without HTML5 support, it uses fallback methods which include Flash and HTML4. There are also improvements to the Metadata, Settings and Editor APIs, and a new tutorial for beginners has been added. Overall performance is also said to have been improved.

Further information about WordPress 3.3 can be found on the 3.3 Codex page; the change log has yet to be posted. Aimed at testers and plug-in developers, WordPress 3.3 RC1 is available to downloadDirect download from the project's site, and requires PHP 5.2.4 and MySQL 5.0 or above. WordPress 3.3 was originally expected to arrive before the end of November but fell behind schedule; a final release date has not been announced.

The current stable release of WordPress is version 3.2.1, a maintenance update that addressed a JSON-related server incompatibility problem. Source code for WordPress is licensed under the GPLv2.
