WordPress Logo Within the space of one week the WordPress development team have released a first and second release candidate for version 3.0 of their open source blogging and publishing platform. According to Peter Westwood, one of the lead WordPress developers, the latest RC2 release was issued to "ensure that the translation teams have a clear line in the sand for the String Freeze which is now in full operation." The next major release of WordPress includes a number of changes, updates and new features over the previous 2.9 branch from late December of last year. The final version is expected to be released later this month.

WordPress 3.0 will feature a new menu management feature, improved child theme support and the addition of a new default Twenty Ten theme, replacing the Kubrick theme. Kubrick and the Classic themes will no longer be included in the distribution, but will still be available in the Themes repository. Support for custom theme backgrounds and the ability to bulk update themes has also been added. Other changes include an expanded contextual help system, a new comment form tag and improvements to custom post types and custom taxonomies.

As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the release candidates, including a list of known issues, are available in a post on the WordPress development blog and on the Codex page for WordPress 3.0. WordPress 3.0 RC2 is available to download (direct download) from the project's release archives. WordPress is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The latest stable release is WordPress 2.9.2
