WordPress Logo The WordPress development team have released version 3.0 of their popular open source blogging and publishing platform, code named “Thelonious”. The thirteenth major update has more than 2,700 changes, including 1,217 bug fixes and feature enhancements.

Version 3.0 now merges WordPress MU (multi-user) and WordPress, allowing users to manage multiple sites using the same installation. A new menu management feature has been added and child theme support has been improved. The release includes a new default Twenty Ten theme, replacing the Kubrick theme. Although Kubrick and the Classic themes will no longer be included in the distribution, they will still be available from the Themes repository.

Other changes include support for custom theme backgrounds and the ability to bulk update themes. The contextual help system has been expanded, a new comment form tag has been added and various improvements have been made to custom post types and custom taxonomies.

More details about the release, including a short video, can be found in a post on the WordPress development blog and on the Codeplex page for version 3.0. WordPress 3.0 is available to download from the project's web site and is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
