WordPress the free blogging software, has been updated to version 2.8 and is now available to download. Visually, the new release looks very much like the previous version 2.7 "Coltrane", but version 2.8, named "Baker", has a number of improvements in themes, widgets and performance. The developers also fixed over 790 bugs.

Syntax highlighting and context sensitive help has been added to the theme and plug-in editor, with the process of installing new themes simplified down to a single mouse click and a new CodePress Editor. The widget API in version 2.8 has been completely redesigned and now allows on-the-fly editing of widgets, multiple copies of the same widget, the ability to save inactive widgets and drag-and-drop widget manipulation.

"Baker" also has Screen Options on every page and allows, for example, the user to display four columns of widgets on a wide screen monitor, rather than the default two. A detailed overview of the changes and new features is available in the change log for version 2.8.
