Wookie widget server to incubate at Apache

Wookie, a Java based server application which eases deployment of Web widgets, such as the W3C Widgets, has begun incubating at the Apache Foundation. The Wookie project started life at the University of Bolton, where a team, supported by the TenCompetence EU project and supported by the CETIS Widgets Working Group, developed the widget server, which is designed for easy integration with other applications such as Moodle and WordPress. Wookie can manage API requests for widgets allowing for managed connections to third party sites by acting as a proxy for those requests. The server is also extensible, allowing it to manage Open Social or Google Wave Gadgets.

Ross Gardler of OSS Watch, which helped shepherd the project into the incubator, said "I congratulate the Wookie team on clearly separating the domain specific features of their work from the generic code that will be useful beyond their core team. It is this, and the teams awareness that restricting their code to a niche market would restrict the pool of contributors, that has enabled OSS Watch to assist Wookie as it worked towards entry into the Apache Incubator."

The Apache incubator is home to new projects looking to become fully fledged Apache Software Foundation projects; during it's time in the incubator, the code will be brought in line with Apache standards and any legal and licensing issues resolved.
