Wireshark Logo The Wireshark development team has announced the arrival of version 1.5.0 of its open source, cross-platform network protocol analyser. According to the developers, Wireshark 1.5.0 is a development preview of what will become Wireshark 1.6, intended for testing new features.

Aimed at early adopters and testers, the experimental release includes a number of new and updated features over the previous 1.4.x branch, such as the option to hide columns in the packet list, export SMB objects and the ability to display the compiled BPF code for capture filters in the Capture Options dialogue. Users are now able to save files with a user-specified group id via Dumpcap, and, similarly to text2pcap, Wireshark can now import text dumps.

Other changes include an option to hide columns in the packet list, syntax checking for capture filters, new protocol support, new and updated capture file support, and various bug fixes. The developers also note that graphs are now saved as PNG files by default.

As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

Further information about the development preview can be found in the mailing list announcement. Wireshark binaries for Windows and Mac OS X, as well as the source code, for the 1.5.0 development release are available to download from the Wireshark Foundation web site.

Formerly known as Ethereal, Wireshark is licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public Licence (GPLv2) and documentation is provided. The latest stable release is Wireshark 1.4.3, a maintenance and security update from earlier this month.
