For the second time, Google invited developers to submit their programs for the Android Developer Challenge. The winners of first prize in ten individual categories bagged $100,000 each, while the second and third place won $50,000 and $25,000 respectively. Google also selected overall winners, and the developer of the winning program received $150,000. Those in second and third place received the same amount as those in the individual categories. The programs entered must be previously unreleased and support the English language.

The overall winner was Sweetdreams. The software allows users to set times when they don't wish to be disturbed, for example after work, during their usual sleep times or during regular meetings. The software offers the option of switching off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections to increase the standby time of the device. Second place overall was awarded to What the Doodle!?, an online game in which players draw a given phrase on their phones which then has to be guessed by the other players. Third place was awarded to WaveSecure, a security solution that can track down a phone in case of theft and render it inoperable. In addition, it allows any data on the phone to be backed up over the mobile network and then deleted from the device.

Google lists the other 30 programs in the categories of education, entertainment, games, lifestyle, media, productivity, social networking, travel and miscellaneous on its competition web page. While almost half of the official judges were Google employees, representatives of T-Mobile, MTV, Twitter and other businesses were also involved in the decision making.

Almost 1,800 developers had submitted their applications to Google in the first round of the Android Developer Challenge, and the winners of the individual categories received prizes worth $275,000. Google didn't select overall winners last year.
