Wine update improves Direct3D and 64-bit support
The Wine developers have announced the release of version 1.1.43 of Wine, the latest development release of their Windows API implementation. Wine, which is an acronym for Wine Is Not an Emulator, is free open source software that allows users to run Windows applications on Linux and Unix by providing its own native versions of Windows DLLs.
Wine 1.1.43 features a number of new icons, Direct3D optimisations and several improvements for 64-bit systems. Other changes include improved support for the alpha channel in bitmaps and more complete msvcr80/90 DLL implementations. A number of bugs related to applications like CDBurnerXP and games, such as Warcraft III, Diablo 2, and Battlefield 2, have also been addressed. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised.
More details about the release can be found in the release notes. Wine 1.1.43 is available to download from SourceForge. User guides and a Wine application compatibility list are also provided. The latest stable release of Wine is version 1.0.1 from October of 2008.
