Wine Logo The Wine project development team has announced the arrival of the latest development branch release of Wine, version 1.3.8. Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) is free open source software that allows users to run Windows applications on Linux and Unix by providing its own native replacements for Windows DLLs.

Wine 1.3.8 addresses nearly 80 bugs found in the previous release and features the addition of support for schemas in Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) and icons in the "open with" menus. Other changes include Man pages for installed binaries, as well as a variety of installer fixes and translation updates. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the development preview, including a full list of changes and bug fixes, can be found in the official release announcement and in the short log. Wine 1.3.8 is available to download from one of the project's mirrors and documentation is provided. The latest stable release is version 1.2.1, a bug fix update to the 1.2 branch from mid-October.

Wine source code is available from SourceForge and is licensed under the LGPL. The Wine Project is sponsored by CodeWeavers, which also shares its own code updates with the Project.
