Wine Logo The Wine developers have announced the availability of a fourth release candidate (RC4) for version 1.2 of their Windows API implementation. Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) is free open source software that allows users to run Windows applications on Linux and Unix by providing its own native replacements for Windows DLLs.

Just over one week after the release of RC3, the latest release candidate for the second major stable update of Wine includes a number of translation updates and fixes more than 70 bugs. Wine 1.2 will include 64-bit support, new icons and several other changes and new features. The final version of Wine 1.2 is expected to arrive "sometime in June". As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised.

Details about the release candidate, including a full list of bug fixes and new features, can be found in the official release announcement. Wine 1.2 RC4 is available to download from one of the project's mirrors. The latest stable release is version 1.0.1 from October of 2008.
