Embedded specialist Wind River is working on a development kit for Android smartphones. The bundle consists of Wind River's own Embedded Linux as well as Android related patches, pre-integrated third party components, an Android-compatible API and the Eclipse-based Wind River Workbench development environment.

The development kit is designed for smartphone manufacturers who want to develop their own Android smartphone based on various standard components. It is complemented by Wind River's range of professional services, such as device-specific adaptations, optimisations and tests. Wind River joined the Open Handset Alliance, the Android industry group, in November 2007 as a commercialisation partner, and the announcement of the development kit confirms their commitment to the nascent mobile platform ecosystem.
