At the end of 2008 the Gnome Project surveyed all users with a Subversion account for accessing the projects source code, asking them their opinions on version control systems, with an eye to the possibility of moving from the current Subversion based system, to a distributed version control system. Gnome release manager Elijah Newren has now published the results in a blog posting, "GNOME DVCS Survey results", which analyses the survey data. According to Newren, there was a 53 per cent response rate to the survey.

The results suggest that respondents are happy to change version control system. The most preferred replacement system was Git, followed by Bazaar and Mercurial. The survey also noted that a reasonable number of participants would prefer to stay with Subversion.
