The Wikimedia Foundation has released a new version of its Wikipedia Mobile application for Apple's iOS mobile operating system. According to its developers, version 3.1 of Wikipedia Mobile for iOS is a "full re-write" of the app that now uses OpenStreetMap exclusively and adds several new features.

For users who don't have a constant data connection, the official Wikipedia app now includes support for saving articles to Read It Later or within the app itself for offline viewing. Search has been improved with the addition of auto-complete and "did you mean" suggestions, as well as full text search. Support for searching nearby articles using a user's location has also been added. Other changes include the option to read articles in different languages.

Following the initial release of the major update, the developers identified an issue with devices running version 5.1 of iOS. Because of this, they temporarily removed it from the Apple App Store, shortly after which they published version 3.1.1 to correct the problem.

Further information about the update can be found in the change log. Version 3.1.1 of the official Wikipedia Mobile app for iOS is available to download from the iTunes App Store. Source code for Wikipedia Mobile is hosted on GitHub and licensed under the GPLv2.
