GNOME 3 logo The GNOME Project has published a web site gnome3.org, to showcase the forthcoming GNOME 3 desktop environment, due for release in April 2011. The web site currently contains a simple overview of the features of the new version of GNOME, plus an FAQ section and a page that describes how to download and compile the code for those wishing "to help out with development and filing bugs".

The web site claims that the new version of the GNOME desktop will be much more visually appealing, and will make it easy for users to keep track of on-going tasks. It states that the addition of an activities key and fast search function will make it much faster to access tasks and activities. The impression given is of a more easily understood and much more responsive desktop.

Among other new features mentioned on the web site are improved window tiling and file manager, and generally improved performance.
