Mozilla has released version 1.0 of Weave, the Firefox extension and service which allows for bookmarks, password, preferences, forms, history and open tabs to be synchronised between Firefox running on different PCs or on mobile devices.

Weave has been in development for over two years, and uses a Mozilla service to hold the synchronisation data in a password protected account and pass phrase encrypted files to keep users' data secure. Weave Sync is available to install from Mozilla's Add-on site for Firefox users on Windows, Mac and Linux systems and Fennec (Firefox for Maemo).

The release notes for Weave 1.0 note that the latest version synchronises bookmarks and history in "chunks" for better performance, but because of this, during the sync process bookmarks could appear to be unsorted. Users of earlier releases of Weave (except the last release candidate, RC4) will find that the new version will do a fresh upload of all data to the server and the developers recommend that if Weave is used primarily as a backup service, then a backup of bookmarks and data should be made locally before upgrading.

Weave is open source and licensed, like Firefox, under the GPL/MPL/LGPL tri-licence.
