W3C to develop HTML5 and its successor in parallel

The W3C has released a statement on its progress with the HMTL5 specification and how it plans to proceed from there. As part of a draft stabilisation plan, the HTML Working Group Chairs have announced a second Last Call review for the HTML5 specification.

A new group of editors will have to be found for the process of ratifying the HTML5 and HTML Canvas 2D Context specifications; meanwhile, the W3C will re-charter the HTML Working Group to begin work on the standardisation of the next version of HTML. As a result of this process, work on what will presumably be HTML6 will be running in parallel with the work that remains to be done to get HTML5 fully ratified as a standard.

Commenting on HTML5's progress, the W3C said that "implementation progress on HTML5 continues to be exceptionally strong" and added that "market adoption of HTML5 also continues to be strong." It did not elaborate on when it expects to finalise the specification, but said that the search for new editors should take approximately a month.
