W3C backdown on HTML5 logo claims
In a blog posting on the W3C blog, Ian Jacobs says that the recently announced HTML5 logo now represents "HTML5, the cornerstone for modern Web applications". The logo had originally been described as representing "HTML5, CSS, SVG, WOFF and other technologies used to build modern Web applications" – this was regarded by some web developers as confusing, as it used the name of the HTML standard as an umbrella term for a range of web technology.
It has also been said that this confusion of terms motivated the WHATWG group to rename their HTML5 specification as HTML, though that decision also sees a change in the development model for HTML at the WHATWG. Jacobs hopes the updated language "better aligns with community expectations", though he also says that the logo is "not yet official", a message that was lost in its "high visibility launch". The HTML5 Logo FAQ has now been updated with the new definition.
