Vyatta Logo Open source networking software and hardware specialist Vyatta has released version 6.1 of its Linux-based router and firewall software. The latest release of the networking distribution has received IPv6 Ready Logo Phase 2 certification to verify the included implementation of the IPv6 core routing protocols and includes several new cloud-specific features.

Layer 2 cloud bridging allows networks that are physically separated to communicate with each other over the Internet as if they were on a single Ethernet network. Other changes include support for the Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP), quality of service (QoS) input interfaces and various enterprise security advancements, such as a stateful firewall fail over and enhanced intrusion prevention services.

Starting with version 6.0, released at the end of March, Vyatta switched to an open-core model, in which all of the free open source components are included in the core. Vyatta Core replaced the previously available Vyatta Community Edition. Additional proprietary components can be added through the Subscription Editions.

The Subscription Edition of Vyatta 6.1 includes a Remote Access API and simplified VPN client management. An optional Vyatta Plus add-on includes VyattaGuard web filtering. The commercial Subscription Editions of Vyatta include full support and priority bug fixes and start at $747 (£484) for a year. The Vyatta Plus add-on is an additional $205 (£133) per year.

More details about the release, including all of its new features, can be found in the release notesPDF. Vyatta Core 6.1 is available to download as a 160 MB LiveCD ISO image file and documentation. Vyatta Core is released under the GNU General Public Licence (GPL).
