VortexBox media server 1.5 released

The VortexBox developers have released version 1.5 of their Fedora based media server. VortexBox is designed to be a quick to install operating system. Once installed on a unused computer, VortexBox turns it into a media server / jukebox which can automatically rip CDs, adding artwork, titles and tags as needed. It can then serve the files to a network using SMB, AppleTalk, DAAP, NFS or DLNA.

The new version fixes problems with iTunes 10 which broke June's release of VortexBox 1.4. The developers took the opportunity to replace the DAAP server entirely, and the replacement is now able to serve FLAC files to iTunes by encoding them as WAV files on-the-fly. VortexBox 1.5 also got the latest Squeezebox Server as an update and an added services control panel.

The ISO image for Vortexbox 1.5 is available to download from the developers web site. VortexBox is also available in the UK installed on VortexBox Appliances, which offer up to 4TB of storage on a pre-installed system for £565 (or 1TB for £395).
