The latest 4.0.4 update to VirtualBox adds guest support for Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha, making it easier for users who want to test the upcoming release of Ubuntu to try it out from within the safety of a virtual machine. Other Linux guest related changes in the VirtualBox update include the addition of EDID emulation in the graphics driver to stop the GNOME settings daemon changing modes at login, and support for the X.Org Server 1.10 pre-release.

More generally, a number of bugs with the recompiler, nested paging, networking and management were resolved. Full details of the changes are available in the VirtualBox change log. VirtualBox 4.0.4 is licensed under the GPL2 and is available for download from the VirtualBox site. The change to the GPL was enabled in version 4.0 by separating out extensions into a stand-alone module; the Oracle VM Extension pack is also available for no charge under the commercial Personal Use and Evaluation Licence.
