Less than one week after the release of the second beta, Sun Microsystems has announced the release of version 3.0 of its open source VirtualBox desktop virtualisation application for x86 hardware. VirtualBox 3.0 is a major update that, in addition to a number of bug fixes and performance improvements, introduces several major new features.

VirtualBox 3.0 now includes Guest Symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) support with up to 32 virtual CPUs (VT-x and AMD-V processors) and adds experimental support for Direct3D 8 and 9 in applications for Windows guests. Additionally, the new release now supports version 2.0 of OpenGL graphics acceleration for Windows, Linux and Solaris guests, dramatically improving overall 3D support.

More details about the release can be found in the Change Log. VirtualBox 3.0 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris. A 259 page user manualPDF is also provided. VirtualBox is released under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2) and VirtualBox binaries are released under the VirtualBox Personal Use and Evaluation License (PUEL) licence.
