Only one week after the first beta was released, VirtualBox developer Frank Mehnert has announced the availability of the second beta of version 3.0 of the open source desktop virtualisation application for x86 hardware. In addition to numerous bug fixes for the previous release, the second beta includes several performance improvements and fixes for SMP guests. Several OpenGL and Direct3D related issues and a high CPU usage issue on certain idle Windows guests, have also been addressed.

As noted in the previous beta release, VirtualBox 3.0 will be a major update including Guest Symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) with up to 32 virtual CPUs and will support version 2.0 of OpenGL graphics acceleration for Windows, Linux and Solaris guests. The developers have also added experimental support for Direct3D 8 and 9 in applications for Windows guests.

More details about the release can be found in the forum release announcement. VirtualBox 3.0 Beta 2 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris and OpenSolaris and is released under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2). VirtualBox binaries are released under the VirtualBox Personal Use and Evaluation License (PUEL) licence. As the developers note that the second beta release is still considered to be "bleeding-edge", use on production or mission critical machines is not advised. The current stable release is VirtualBox 2.2.4 from the end of May. A final release date for version 3.0 of VirtualBox, however, has yet to be announced.
