VirtualBox developer Frank Mehnert has announced the release of the first beta of version 3.0 of the open source desktop virtualisation application for x86 hardware. VirtualBox 3.0 Beta 1 is a major update and includes several bug fixes and new features.

The 3.0 beta includes the addition of Guest Symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) with up to 32 virtual CPUs and supports version 2.0 of OpenGL graphics acceleration for Windows, Linux and Solaris guests. Experimental support for Direct3D 8 and 9 in applications and games has also been added for Windows guests. The developers advise that the beta release is considered to be "bleeding-edge" and that it is meant for early evaluation and testing purposes only. Use on production or mission critical machines is not advised.

More details about the release can be found in the forum release announcement. A list of known beta problems is also available. VirtualBox 3.0 Beta 1 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris and OpenSolaris. VirtualBox is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
