In a new round of financing, virtualisation specialist Virtual Iron has received $20m of risk capital. Investors include Highland Capital Partners, Matrix Partners, Goldman Sachs, Intel Capital and SAP Ventures. This cash injection puts the total amount of risk capital invested in the start-up company, founded in 2003, at $65m.

The free hypervisor Xen serves as Virtual Iron's technical foundation, but developers have modified it and added an administration layer for virtual infrastructure. The Lowell, Massachusetts-based company positions its software as an alternative to the offerings from the market leader VMware.
