The developers of the vert.x event-driven Java web development framework have released version 1.2 of their software. This version introduces a module system and a public module repository; the new system will allow users to automatically and manually install modules into vert.x applications.

In contrast to its major competitor Node.js, which uses JavaScript, vert.x is based on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) – this makes the framework usable in Java, Ruby, Groovy and JavaScript applications. Support for Python applications has been added using Jython, and developers can now use the CoffeeScript language which compiles into JavaScript.

The vert.x framework is licensed under version 2.0 of the Apache licence and its source code can be downloaded from GitHub. The first version of vert.x was launched in May as a polyglot alternative to the JavaScript-centric Node.js and exploits the JVM's capabilities for better performance and scaling.
