Moodle founder, Martin Dougiamas, has announced the release of version 2.2 of his open source e-learning platform. Short for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, Moodle is a cross-platform course management system (CMS) – also known as a virtual learning environment (VLE) or learning management system (LMS) – whose goal is to provide educators with tools for managing and promoting learning for their students.

Moodle 2.2 is a major update that includes a new advanced grading methods subsystem. The first advanced grading plug-in is, the developers say, a "long-requested feature": support for Rubrics. These are used for criteria-based assessment, but only currently work for assignments; they will be extended across all modules in a later release.

Support for the IMS LTI standard is built-in and allows Moodle to embed learning objects and tools from other sites into courses, and pass user data to and from the tool. A new Mymobile standard theme has been added for use on smartphones when users access Moodle via mobile web browsers. Additionally, users can once again import IMS Common Cartridge (CC) standard packages (1.9 included this feature). The ability to export to CC packages will be added in version 2.3, scheduled for release in June 2012.

At the same time, the developers have published updates to the 2.1.x, 2.0.x and 1.9.x branches of Moodle. Versions 2.1.3, 2.0.6 and 1.9.15 address a total of 13 security vulnerabilities. These include "serious" ip_in_range, authentication, and CRLF injection issues, as well as an information disclosure problem. A number of bugs found in previous builds have also been fixed. Further information, including a full list of fixes, is provided in the 2.1.3, 2.0.6 and 1.9.15 release notes; all users are advised to upgrade to the latest versions as soon as possible.

More details about the 2.2 update, including a full list of improvements, can be found in the release notes. Moodle 2.2 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux from the project's site; source code is licensed under the GPLv3.
