The latest release of the open source qooxdoo JavaScript library, version 2.1, brings with it several enhancements and new features, such as official support for Microsoft's Internet Explorer 10 web browser. The addition of IE 10 support allows the universal framework to target new platforms including Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, as well as Windows RT for ARM-based tablets.

For new users, a Live Tutorial application has been introduced that is designed to guide them through basic desktop and mobile examples. For qooxdoo's web-oriented features, several new modules for local Storage, support for Placeholders in form fields, DOM element Placement, and client-side Messaging have been added, and cross-browser animations have been improved.

The qooxdoo framework has been updated with new mobile widgets. These include a Carousel and a Picker dialog, as well as scrolling TextAreas and Canvas. Mobile form layout is said to have been polished and widgets now include translation, rotation and scale transform functions.

Support for Dynamic Theme Switching has been added when using several themes for an desktop application. Animations such as fade in, fade out and scroll have been added to the widget set, and the VirtualTree widget for handling large hierarchical data sets now includes advanced options to filter and sort items. According to its developers, the qooxdoo SDK's toolchain "is now faster and more robust" thanks to a new JavaScript parser. Code validation is done by a single tool that has improvements for validating JavaScript and JSON files. The pretty-print module has also been updated to add new features for reformatting code.

An overview of the bug fixes, improvements and new features in version 2.1 of qooxdoo can be found in the release notes. Qooxdoo 2.1 is available to download from the project's site and documentation is provided.

The framework has primarily been developed by employees from German web hosting company 1&1. Hosted on GitHub, source code for qooxdoo is dual-licensed under the LGPL and the Eclipse Public Licence (EPL).
