Zoom Pinta turns 1.0 (has cake).
Novell open source programmer Jonathan Pobst has announced the release of version 1.0 of his simple Pinta painting application, modelled after Paint.NET, nearly 15 months after version 0.1 arrived. Discussing the release, Pobst says that "Pinta is proud to join the ~1% of open source projects that make it to version 1.0!"

Adding no new features, Pinta 1.0 addresses several bugs found in the previous versions, including problems that could lead the application to crash on startup if a toolbar was removed, and a bug related to file names under Windows. Pobst says that he will publish a roadmap of where future development will be going, "in the next month or so", hinting that plugins will be involved. A new feature requests page has also been created where users can submit and vote on new features for Pinta.

Pinta features support for an unlimited number of layers, a full history allowing users to undo any of their actions and a number of drawing tools to draw freehand, lines, rectangles and ellipses. Users can customise their workspace by choosing either docked or floating windows, or a combination of the two. Pinta includes various tools, such as a Clone Stamp tool for removing unwanted objects and imperfections from photos, and more than 35 adjustments and effects for tweaking images – these include Levels, Curves, Brightness/Contrast, Hue/Saturation and Posterize, Ink Sketch, Oil Painting, Pencil Sketch, Gaussian Blur and Glow.

A full list of changes can be found in the release notes. Pinta 1.0 is available to download for Mac OS X, openSUSE and Ubuntu and requires Mono. Windows is also supported and requires Gtk# for Windows and Mono for Windows. Pinta is released under the MIT X11 licence.
