VMWare joins the Linux Foundation

VMWare has joined the Linux Foundation joining, among others, Adobe, AMD, Dell, Fujitsu, Google, Hitachi, HP, IBM, Intel, Motorola, NEC, Novell, Oracle and Red Hat, in the foundation's membership. The VMWare announcement made reference to its past work in the open source arena such as working with others paravirtualisation for the Linux Kernel and the release of open-vm-tools to the community. Dan Chu, VMWare's vice president of emerging products and solutions said "We are delighted to become a member of The Linux Foundation and look forward to making future contributions to the Linux community."

Some commentators have pointed out that there is still a question over VMWare's use of Linux within VMWare ESX Server, saying that questions raised in 2007 over how the GPL applied to its use of Linux code have still not been answered. The question of what constitutes a derived work in GPL terms dominates the debate. VMWare has said it does not believe what it has implemented in ESX Server violates the GPL.
