VLC Media Player update adds support for Mountain Lion

Existing VLC users should receive an update notification unless they've set the player to automatically update The developers at the VideoLAN project have released version 2.0.3 of the VLC Media Player. Most of the changes are targeted at the Mac OS X platform – with the next major update to Apple's desktop operating system expected to arrive next week, the 2.0.3 release of the open source media player adds support for Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, including the Gatekeeper security feature, and fixes several Mac-specific bugs.

These include tweaks for Apple keyboard hotkey handling and toggling full-screen mode. Bugs affecting Flash Video (FLV) playback, APE files, and some radio streams broadcast using the HTTP protocol have also been corrected. Other changes include fixes for drawing VLC's interface on Windows 8, updates for 18 translations, and the addition of support for the Uzbek and Marathi languages.

On the same day as VLC 2.0.3, the project also updated VLC for Android, which is currently in beta. According to the "What's New" section on the app's Google Play store page, the second beta of VLC for Android (version 0.0.2) improves overall stability on versions 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" and 4.1 "Jelly Bean" of Android. Additionally, the new beta allows users to copy the app to a device's SD card and addresses "a lot of bugs and crashes".

Details about the desktop update can be found in a blog post by VLC Mac OS X port developer Felix Kühne; at the time of writing, the NEWS file has yet to be updated. VLC 2.0.3 is available to download for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or later. Binaries and source code for VLC are licensed under the GPLv2.
