VLC Less than two months after the release of VLC 1.0.1, which was downloaded more than 27 million times, the VLC developers have announced the availability of version 1.0.2 of their popular VLC Media Player, code-named Goldeneye. VLC is a free open source cross-platform multimedia player for various audio and video formats.

The update includes a number of bug fixes and addresses a previously reported critical security vulnerability that could lead to the remote execution of arbitrary code. VLC 1.0.2 also includes native decoder support for WMA Professional, various Theora and Ogg fixes, a Universal Binary for the "Delete Preferences" script and full 64-bit runtime compatibility for both Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6. The developers encourage all users to upgrade to the latest release as soon as possible.

More details about the release can be found in the change log. VLC 1.0.2 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Existing users can use the built-in "Check for Updates" feature to upgrade to the latest release. VLC is released under version two of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2).

Update - In a post on the VLC mailing list, the developers point out a bug in versions 1.0.0 and 1.0.1 which may prevent the player from auto-updating. As version 1.0.2 also closes several security holes, affected users are advised to update manually as soon as possible - which reportedly also fixes this issue.
