Urbi Logo French robotics specialist Gostai has announced that its advanced Urbi robotics operating system is now available as open source. The robotics platform is compatible with Linux, Windows and several real-time operating systems and uses a new orchestration script language called urbiscript that natively integrates parallelism and event-based programming.

Discussing the announcement at the ICRA’10 conference in Alaska, Gostai’s Founder and CEO Jean-Christophe Baillie said, “Going open source with a GNU GPL compatible license is the best way to make sure that Urbi will always be available freely for everyone to use, check and share, while maintaining a dual licensing model providing support and advanced features for commercial partners," adding that, "Coming from an academic research lab, Gostai has always believed in the open-source model and sharing of innovation. It has been a long time since we worked to prepare Urbi for that move, and now it's ready!” Urbi software is already available to power of a wide range of devices, including Sony's Aibo robotic dog, the Segway, Lego Mindstorms NXT and many others.

More information on Urbi can be found on the project's Urbi Forge portal. The latest stable release, version 2.1, of the Urbi SDK is available to download from the project's web site and documentation is provided. Urbi source code is licensed under version 3 of the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPLv3).
