Upstart 1.0 released
On the Upstart development blog, Scott James Remnant has announced the release of version 1.0 of the event-based init replacement. According to his posting it seems developers and users have different expectations of 1.0.x versions. While the temptation for the developers is to load version 1.0 with all the features you could possibly want, users would prefer that stability be favoured over bells and whistles.
Upstart 1.0 is claimed to meet users' expectations. This version is essentially based on the code in Upstart 0.6, that shipped with both the last Ubuntu LTS and with Red Hat RHEL. The developers have made a number of bug fixes, for example: an assertion when a file named /etc/init/.conf is created; utmp entries replaced with DEAD_PROCESS ones when a pid supervised by Upstart terminates; and, shutdown now correctly returns an error code if it fails to shutdown the system.
