Univention Corporate Server 3 release candidate available
Univention has released the first release candidate of its UCS 3.0 server distribution. Major changes since Univention Corporate Server 2.4 include the integration of Samba4. Univention Corporate Server now offers comprehensive Active Directory functions and can be employed as a domain controller for AD environments. The Bremen-based vendor has also fundamentally restructured the management system, which now unites the Univention Management Console (UMC) and the Univention Directory Manager (UDM) in a new Ajax interface produced using the Dojo JavaScript library.
UCS 3.0 is based on Debian 6.0 "Squeeze", and can use all of its packages. Some applications, including Firefox, Samba and OpenLDAP, have been updated. Univention continues to use Xen for virtualisation, including version 4.1 in this release. UCS 3.0 supports IPv6 and uses Nagios 3 as a monitoring solution.
The Univention Corporate Server is a Linux distribution for medium and large companies and government agencies with up to 50,000 users, with the emphasis on the operation and administration of IT infrastructure – network-wide user and privileges management, network and email services, client management and virtualisation. A DVD image of UCS 3.0 RC1 for 32- and 64-bit x86 architectures is available to download. Information on installation and on upgrading from version 2.4 can be found in the Univention wiki. The final version of Univention Corporate Server is scheduled to be released in early December.
