Ubuntu logo The fifth development version of the next version of Ubuntu 9.10, codenamed Karmic Koala, has been announced by the developers. The updated milestone has a Linux Kernel now based on 2.6.31-rc8 and GNOME updated from 2.27.4 to 2.27.91. Full details of the changes and a list of known issues are available in the release notes.

The standard Ubuntu Desktop, Server and Netbook Remix versions are available to download. The notes also include download links to the other five variants of Ubuntu Karmic Alpha 5: Ubuntu Desktop for ARM, Ubuntu Server for UEC and EC2, Kubuntu Desktop and Netbook, Xubuntu and Mythbuntu.

Pre-releases like this are not recommended for anyone who needs a stable system or who isn't comfortable with "occasional, even frequent breakage", and should not be used on production systems. Ubuntu 9.10 is scheduled to be released on October 29th, 2009.
