At the Ubuntu Developer Summit, the developers have been deciding on what changes should be made to the line up of default applications. According to a report on OMGUbuntu F-Spot is to be replaced with Shotwell as the default image application.

F-Spot is a GTK+ application in C# and Mono and has been a controversial application predominantly due to that choice of development language and runtime. Shotwell is a less contentious choice, written in Vala (which in turn compiles to C). However, the change appears to have been made on other grounds, such as better memory management. Tomboy, another Mono based application, is remaining in Ubuntu 10.10.

Few other changes have been made to the application line up for Ubuntu 10.10 on the desktop; Rhythmbox, Evolution and OpenOffice will all remain, a game may be added and Chromium is to be supported as a "first class citizen" but will not replace Firefox as default browser. The story is slightly different for Chromium on Ubuntu's Netbook Edition of 10.10; the developers plan to make it the default in that edition, at least until UNE 10.10 alpha 3, at which point they will re-evaluate the decision for the final release.
