Ubuntu Tweak logo The Ubuntu Tweak development team has announced the release of version 0.6.0 of its popular open source application for customising the Ubuntu Linux distribution. With Ubuntu Tweak, users can configure their installations by changing a number of desktop and system options that are not provided with the default Unity environment.

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6.0 supports the recent Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot" release – previous versions of Ubuntu are no longer supported – and has a new user interface design that the developers hope will make it easier to use. The "Tweaks" panel includes 12 major features that users can change. These include startup, desktop and system options, and appearance changes affecting fonts and the system theme.

Under the desktop section of the Tweaks panel, new Unity Settings allow users to customise the Launcher, Dash and Panel under both the 2D and 3D Unity desktop. Janitor in Ubuntu Tweak is similar to the older "Computer Janitor" tool but has a simplified UI and additional features; with it, users can scan their systems and clean up temporary files in various caches.

Further information about the major update can be found in the announcement blog post and in the release notes. Ubuntu Tweak 0.6.0 is available to download as a .deb file for Ubuntu 11.10. Distributions based on Oneiric Ocelot, such as Linux Mint 12, are also supported. Hosted on Launchpad, source code for Ubuntu Tweak is licensed under the GPLv2.
