The Ubuntu developers have reminded users that as Ubuntu 9.04 was released in April 2009, it is now approaching the end of its eighteen month life. After the 23rd of October 2010, there will be no more security updates or critical fixes for this version.

Users can upgrade to a later version such as 9.10 which has the same 18 month supported life, or to 10.04 LTS, the long term support version which has a three year supported life. However, there is no direct upgrade to 10.04 LTS; users wishing to upgrade to the long term support version will have to first upgrade to 9.10 and then upgrade to 10.04. Instructions for upgrading to 9.10 are available including troubleshooting hints and notes on other issues that users may experience during the upgrade.
