Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server reaches end of life

Ubuntu logo (old version) Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server, the first "Long Term Support" release of Ubuntu has reached its end of life and is now completely unsupported; there will be no more security updates or critical bug fixes. Ubuntu 6.06 was released on 1 June 2006 and Ubuntu committed to support the server edition for five years. Any users still running Ubuntu 6.06 Server are recommended to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS "Hardy Heron", even if they are planning to upgrade to a later version of Ubuntu – instructions on how to upgrade are available on the HardyUpgrades help page.

Matt Zimmerman announced the end of the life in a mailing list posting saying: "Ubuntu 6.06 LTS was a major milestone for the Ubuntu project... Its retirement evokes memories of Ubuntu as a younger project, and reminds us of all that we've accomplished together in the five years since we released the 'Dapper Drake'". Zimmerman, who recently left his position as CTO of Canonical to join Singly, thanked everyone who helped make Ubuntu 6.06 happen.
