Ubuntu Logo Canonical's Ubuntu Community Manager Jono Bacon has announced that the next Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS) will be take place from the 25th to the 29th of October, 2010 at The Caribe Royal hotel and convention centre in Orlando, USA. According to Bacon, the Ubuntu Developer Summit is "one of the most important events in the Ubuntu calendar and at it we discuss, debate and design the next version of Ubuntu".

The Ubuntu Developer Summit events are aimed at bringing together developers from all around the globe to define what the next version of the open source Debian-based operating system, in this case version 11.04 of Ubuntu, will look like. Those interested in attending the summit are advised to be prepared to actively participate in the sessions.

Each year, Canonical sponsors several community members and developers to attend the event. Those interested in requesting sponsorship can do so by providing a brief description about themselves and the work that they've done on Ubuntu. The deadline for sponsorship submissions is the 8th of September, 2010. More details are available on the UDS Sponsorship page.

Less than one week ago, Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth announced that the code name for the April 2011 release of Ubuntu 11.04 would be "Natty Narwhal". Shuttleworth said that he selected the Narwhal as a reminder of "the fact we have only one spaceship that can host all of humanity"; the Narwhal is an endangered Arctic whale, recognisable by its single long helical tusk.

More details on how community members and vendors can participate, including travel information, can be found on the new UDS web site. The next release of Ubuntu will be version 10.10, code named "Maverick Meerkat", scheduled for release on October 10th, 2010 (10/10/10). The latest stable version is Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, code named "Lucid Lynx", from mid-August.
