The Ubuntu developers have made the first and only release candidate of Ubuntu 10.10, Maverick Meerkat, available. The final release of Ubuntu 10.10 is scheduled for October 10th.

The release candidate includes later versions of GNOME 2.32.0, KDE 4.5.1 and the 2.6.35.3 based Linux kernel than those in the earlier beta release which used development versions. The Ubuntu Font has also been included in this release as the default interface font. The Evolution mail application has been updated to the faster version 2.30, Shotwell has now replaced F-Spot as the default photo manager and the sound indicator applet is now able to control the music player application.

Other changes since the beta release include Gwibber being updated to work with Twitter's OAUTH based authentication, a new default wallpaper, a new look installer which further simplifies the install process and support for .deb files and 'pay-for' applications in the Software Centre.

There are still a number of known issues in the release candidate, which, as with all pre-release software, is not recommended for production use. These include problems with the Wubi Windows installer and issues with specific computer models such as the Lenovo S10-3 netbook.

The Ubuntu 10.10 release candidate is available to download in a range of different editions; 32-bit and 64-bit x86 desktop and server, a netbook edition with the new Unity interface, versions with alternative desktops (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Ununtu Studio and MythBuntu), and images for cloud services.
