A Forrester Research survey of businesses reveals that 46 per cent of businesses in the UK, France, Germany, the US and Canada, have implemented open source software or plan to pilot it this year. The UK lags behind the average with a 40 per cent adoption figure, while France and Germany lead the field at 58 per cent and 49 per cent adoption.

The survey notes the main motivation of adoption is cost savings, with 56 per cent of the respondents citing lower costs as a driver. The Forrester analysts suggest that this "cost cutting crisis" should be seen as an opportunity for open source in the enterprise, especially as the survey shows implementation and expansion of open source in businesses is higher than enterprise service buses, application life-cycle management, business process management and other technologies.

Jeffery S. Hammond, principal analyst at Forrester, sees the situation as promising, but does sound a note of warning saying businesses need to beware of "uncontrolled tactical use" of open source. He believes that enterprises need to develop "sound OSS adoption policies" to mitigate this risk.
