Two updates for IPFire open source firewall released

IPFire Project Leader and developer Michael Tremer has announced the release of two new core updates to version 2.11 of his open source firewall. Core 54 includes updates for network hardware, such as new Intel network drivers, as well as updated versions of the Squid proxy server, the Snort network intrusion prevention and detection system, and the smartmontools package.

Other changes include fixes for the intrusion detection system rules download system, a syntax error in the DHCP client script and a problem in the H.323 connection tracking modules that caused them not to be loaded when the system starts. Tremer also notes that changes to the web proxy service should, in some cases, reduce the amount of memory it requires. The second Core release, Core 55, includes an updated OpenSSL package which closes six security holes found in previous versions and also updates OpenSSH to version 5.9p1.

IPFire is a Linux server distribution that can be booted from a CD or USB drive, or installed to a computer's internal drive. Source code for IPFire is licensed under the GPLv3.
