Trimble Yuma: a rugged Ubuntu-based tablet

The Trimble Yuma rugged tablet is now available with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS SDG Systems has announced the availability of a Linux-based version of its Yuma rugged tablet computer, part of its Trimble product range. According to SDG Systems President Todd Blumer, the company decided to offer a Linux option based on feedback from its customers; previously the device only shipped with Windows 7 Professional.

Designed for field data collection, military and industrial applications, the Trimble Yuma meets the United States Military's MIL-STD-810F standard and runs the Netbook Edition of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, the Long Term Support version of Canonical's Linux distribution. However, the company notes that "other Linux distributions are available upon request with a minimum purchase agreement or engineering fee".

The dust- and water-resistant tablet features hardware specifications similar to that of a standard netbook. It has a 7-inch touchscreen display (and comes with stylus) and includes a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0. The Yuma also includes a 32 GB or 80 GB solid-state drive (SSD), SDIO and ExpressCard slots, two cameras and integrated GPS. A full specification list can be found in the company's product datasheet.
