GarageGames, maker of the Torque 3D game engine, has revealed its plans to open source its software. The company will make its engine available under the MIT License and will shift its focus to providing support, training and consulting for the users of the software, and will create custom applications using the engine as part of that process.

The company also explained that it will be sharing the source code for the engine in a GitHub repository and that complete source code for version 1.2 of Torque 3D will be released, including four templates to help get started with games development. The company says that several other, currently closed source, components of the engine will be released later under an open source licence.

Torque 3D has been under development for more then ten years and was first used for the first person shooter Tribes 2 in 2001. It has since been used for a variety of other games including the Penny Arcade Adventures titles. The Torque engine supports Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and comes with a tool suite that also supports creating browser-based games.
