As reported in eWeek, following Microsoft's suit against Tom Tom for infringement of eight patents, the Sat Nav manufacturer has decide the best defence is offence and made a counter claim against Microsoft. TomTom are now claiming that Microsoft's Streets and Trips travel and map software infringes on four of their patents.

The case originally caused some concern that it might be a covert attack on Linux because two of the Microsoft patents in question relate to the FAT file system. Linux does provide support for FAT and TomTom use Linux as the embedded operating system in several of their products.
