Tiny Core Project lead Robert Shingledecker has released version 4.7 of his minimal desktop Linux distribution. Shingledecker says that the major theme for the new version is improvements to its bundled GUI programs. The OnDemand system has been overhauled to add support for Self Contained Mountable (SCM) applications OnDemand menus and icons.

The "filetool" Backup/Restore GUI, available under the Control Panel, has been updated to include options to display the backup process, and make it easy to add or delete files and directories. Improvements have also been made to extension auditing: support for checking for unneeded OnBoot items has been added. The change allows users to eliminate unnecessary OnBoot items to improve their system's boot time.

Weighing in at 8 to 64MB depending on the "core" used, Tiny Core features the BusyBox tool utility and a minimal graphics system based on the Fast Light ToolKit (FLTK) and the Fast Light Window Manager (FLWM). The OS can run entirely in RAM, allowing it to boot very quickly. Using online repositories, Tiny Core Linux can be expanded to include additional applications. Three core versions of the distribution are available: the Tiny Core system includes a desktop, while the Core version includes only a command-line interface; CorePlus is an extended version of the Core that also bundles several community packaged extensions.

An overview of all of the changes in 4.7 can be found in the release announcement. Licensed under the GPLv2, Tiny Core 4.7 can be downloaded as Tiny Core, Core and CorePlus ISO image files from the project's site and an installation guide is provided.
